Reflection: the first time I read this a few years ago I was in a support position and assisted teachers with the launch. Last summer I reread because I was going back into the classroom after my position being cut due to budgets. Midsummer I found out my class would not make, so I was a specials teacher instead of teaching Kindergarten. Again I've been slated to teach Kindergarten and I'm hoping it happens. I just reread for the fun of it D5 again and really hope to implement it in my classroom come August.
I really like Figure 1-4 on page 14. I work with involved and educated parents. I think if I had to explain what we were doing during reading this would help explain with confidance that I am doing what is best for their child and meeting the needs for all the students in our class.
1. How do I teach new behaviors?
Model-Remodel with students-Demonstrate the wrong and redirect to make it correct
2. How do I teach expectations?
Respect for all in the journey of learning.Model what this looks like and practice not settle for less.
3. How do I monitor student behavior? whole group? small groups? individual?
Our school is a PBIS school so using CHAMPS is a preferred option for sharing with students the whole group expectations of movement and voice level. This also works well with I-charts expectations. I-charts really give students meaning for why the behaviors are needed for learning. This past year many of our teachers began using Class DoJo to monitor individual behaviors both positive and negative. This is something I can utilize on my tablet or phone, so it can be part of the entire day not just during Daily 5.
4. What do I do when a student is not exhibiting desired behavior?
If during the Launch then the time is up.
During the check in use this concern as a teachable moment.
Use them as the non-Model student to then redirect the desired behavior.
5. Whose classroom is it?
Ours! Building a community is so important for trust.
6. Locus of control?
Individual conversation will be needed, extra practice and review of I-Charts and bring the idea of urgency to them in a different manner of understanding.
7. Where are supplies stored?
Book Boxes along the front of the room.
WordWork in tubs that are taken to spots to use
Writing Journals in Writing Area of the Room
Listen to Reading is achieved by use of Books on CDs or Tape, using TumbleBooks or MeeGenius on donated devices such as iPod Touches or discarded Android Phones which each hit the guest wifi logins.
